The Maranda Writes

You HAVE the Right to know!!

Writing a news release can be tricky, thats why I have outlined 10 things that will help you the next time you sit down to write one of these pesky releases…

  1. Make sure the info is newsworthy
  2. Make sure the first 10 words of your release are effective, as they are the most important.
  3. Avoid the unneccessary exclamation point if not necessary.
  4. Make sure to get permission from companies on official information and facts.
  5. Use active not passive voice.
  6. Avoid fluff language, stick to  the facts in your release. Dont include extra wording, just for the purpose of adding extra space.
  7. Make certain the first paragraph includes all the vital information: the where, when, why, what and who.
  8. Center these marks, ” # # #” or “-30-“, at the bottom of the page to indicate the end of your release.
  9. Create a dateline – the first line of the body of your press release – that includes the city where the release is generated and the date (i.e. LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – January 1, 2000).
  10. Print the words “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE” in the top left-hand margin in all caps. Follow this line with relevant contact information: name, title, address, phone number, email address.
