The Maranda Writes

You HAVE the Right to know!!

Foursquare is a new social media site that combines gaming, tourism, and twitter into one user friendly website. It was created by a team of 6 individuals lead by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai, with the help of 300 colleagues and friends (as stated on the site).  Grasping the concept of the site can be a bit overwhelming at first, so I am going to synthesize the information into a convenient summary.

First ask yourself these questions….

Do I travel a lot? Do I like visiting new places? Do I like to be in contact with my friends? Do I have valuable information to share with those around me?

If you answered, “yes” to all of these questions then this is the site for you.  Foursquare is a free social media site, frequently mentioned on twitter, allows you to “check-in” at whatever location you are at the time, so friends around you can know where you are.  At the local meat market, picking up some chicken wings to feed your pit bull? Foursquare it.  For the places that you visit frequently you people can earn “badges” and can even be elected mayor of that particular place.  But you have to be sure to keep Foursquaring your location or another person can steal the esteemed title.  For example if you visit the local Olive Garden the most of out people registered in the Statesboro area, you are the, “Mayor of Olive Garden.”  For companies registered with Foursquare, mayors can receive prizes.  Not satisfied with your visit to Papa Zoe’s Pizza, write a review about it and list your favorite or least favorite dish. It suggests meals, nearby places to visit, and tops from other uses about the same area or place.  There are also convenient apps for Blackberry (Team Blackberry!), IPhone, Android, and Palm, for those that are on the go!

Companies are benefiting because they are able to monitor their customer review and visitation of their company.  This is another mechanism that companies can use to directly access their customer base.  However there are certain downsides for users registered with Foursquare.  Foursquare is a location based service, an information and entertainment service, accessible with mobile devices through the mobile network and utilizing the ability to make use of the geographical position of the mobile device (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Location-based_service).   This presents certain dangers in privacy measures since the program is tracking and stores the locations of the user.  This information can be dangerous is exploited and left in the wrong hands.  This can be alarming to Americans that pride themselves on that hold their privacy dear to heart!

Now that you know what foursquare is, will you be using the it?
